I took an intro to oil painting class and had no idea how challenging, but rewarding, it could be. My main sticking point (and there are many) is learning to mix colors. It's complicated and easy to overthink and get paralyzed by perfection.
In our class, we were taught that a great way to learn to paint is by copying paintings. So many things you see here are my feeble copies. I'll let you know when I come up with a good original.
My favorites are Erin Gregory and Maggie Siner. I'll also just search "abstract florals" on Pinterest and find something that catches my eye.
Thanks to coronavirus, my painting class is no more. I set up a makeshift studio at home. Not ideal but good enough! The light is terrible, but it doesn't matter: I'm painting. You know how you get better at painting? By painting.
Check out the essay I wrote about it in R•Home magazine. https://richmondmagazine.com/home/on-home/
